Subject : RE: Questions ahead of meeting on AFC

Shalom Lazar,

I'd be happy to meet with you guys to discuss these topics, and with my old friends Tsach and Eyal. I'll return Friday morning after a couple of weeks of leave (hence the delay in my reply). I may be busy the weeks of 15-18 and 23-27 Sep.

Important follow-up thought: suppose I had last-minute travel funds that must be used this fiscal year (i.e. before 1 October). If I used that to bring some AFC concepts guys to Israel to exchange expertise on some of the below, would it be possible to arrange a visit in late September? I realize it's extremely short notice, but I think that MG Strick's (and others') interest in standing up MDO-capable units, etc., is also short notice. Let me know if this might be possible; I know it's something Dado has wanted to do for a while.

Travel funding in the US Army is running on absurd stop-and-start right now, so a rough answer tomorrow (Thurs) would be great... trying to seize a fleeting opportunity here. I'm including Benzi because he is the boss man for visits.

Very Respectfully,

Ethan Orwin

Subject: [Non-DoD Source] Questions ahead of meeting on AFC

Hello Ethan,

I am not sure if Tzach Moshe from Mazi spoke with you yet, but if he hasn't - just be aware that in the coming weeks we (me, Rave, and Tzach) will be reaching out to you to set up a meeting to discuss the Army Futures Command, and to help us understand where things stand in terms of the AFC being stood up, and where potential cooperation might lay over the next year.

These are some of the questions we would be looking to explore with you -

1)      What stage is the AFC at in its creation? When would it be ready to weigh joint learning opportunities? Has it started any joint learning?

2)      Has the AFC received official orders on its missions and tasks?

3)      Which issues around ground warfare with the AFC deal with?

4)      Which missions that formerly resided in the J7 will be transferred to the AFC?

5)      Which methodologies will the AFC use in order to understand trends, the future battlefield, the enmy, society, defining priorities, etc? Is the AFC interested in developed any of these methodologies?

6)      Will the AFC deal with MDB or A2/AD?

7)      Who are the relevant individuals in the AFC that we should contact about joint learning?

8)      Has the AFC begun to plan conferences and large events? Which conferences will its leading figures be attending in the coming year?

9)      Has the US Army strategic design methodology  changed in light of the creation of the AFC and its role?

Please let me know if you have any questions - if not, we will be in touch to set up the meeting shortly.

Best wishes,

Lazar Berman
