"The sixth scroll"
There is a growing movement throughout Israel and the Jewish world to consider Israel’s Scroll of Independence, Megillat HaAtzmaut as the sixth Megillah, or sacred scroll, in the Jewish canon.
Just as we ceremoniously read, discuss, and re-interpret the five biblical Megillot every year at appointed times-- Megillat Esther on Purim, Megillat Eicha on Tisha B’Av, etc. an increasing number of communities are choosing to ceremoniously read Megillat HaAtzmaut each year on Yom HaAtzmaut.
This allows us to ask, what’s so special about this modern scroll and what values does it represent? We can ask ourselves how this scroll fits into the fabric of Jewish tradition and the relevance it has for us today.
